Big Y Launches Donation Program to Support Oklahoma Disaster Relief Effort

The American Red Cross has a huge relief response to Oklahoma and other surrounding communities underway and Big Y World Class Market is doing its part to send help and hope to those in need.

From Saturday, May 25th to Saturday, June 8th, Big Y customers and employees will have the opportunity to donate to American Red Cross Disaster Relief at all Big Y locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. Donation Containers will be available at all Big Y registers. The funds raised will support people in the communities affected by the Oklahoma Tornado.

“The Red Cross continues to expand our relief efforts across Oklahoma, with additional kitchens opening today and more trucks and volunteers flowing into the state, said Red Cross of Central and Western Massachusetts CEO, Lisa Piehler. “Thanks to Big Y, their customers and employees, the Red Cross can continue to provide safe refuge, food and snacks, emotional support and health care services to people in need.”

Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need. Past initiatives include campaigns to support both international and domestic disasters such as the 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina. Following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Big Y collected donations from customers and employees resulting in a donation of $108,277.32 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund – Haiti Relief and Development. After the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, Big Y presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $100,000. When devastation hit right in our own back yard in 2011, Big Y, its customers and employees donated $141,000 to Red Cross tornado relief. Most recently, through similar efforts, Big Y Foods presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $75,000 for relief efforts do to Hurricane Sandy that struck in October.
