PMA: Alsum Farms & Produce Redesigns Bins

Alsum Farms & Produce will be sharing three new potato bins for grocers with an eye on fast, fresh and easy meal preparation at PMA.

According to Heidi Alsum-Randall, marketing manager, “We conducted a series of consumer research studies and spoke with grocers before designing the potato bins. And what they repeatedly told us is that people need affordable, healthy meal alternatives that they can make in minutes,” she notes.

Research also indicated a growing interest in pre-packaged single potatoes, family-packs and microwaveable packaging. The new potato bins are designed for easy set-up. “Grocers need to be able to set up the bins in minutes. The bins are also waist-high, putting the fresh product in optimal view,” says Alsum-Randall.

One bin, designed to hold ready-to-make, pre-packaged singles, features Larry Alsum, CEO and president. Another bin caters to consumers who prefer grilling out or the ease of popping a potato in the oven; this bin can hold both pre-wrapped singles and family packs. The third bin features Fast and Fresh Steamer Potatoes that can be cooked in less than five minutes within the microwave-friendly packaging.

The Alsum Griller Russets come in a pack of four. Each potato is pre-washed and wrapped in gold foil. Consumers simply open the package, set their potato on the grill and they’re ready to go. The Fast & Fresh Steamers are conveniently packaged. All the consumer has to do is place the pre-washed and bagged potatoes into the microwave for five minutes and they have a nutritious fresh meal on hand.

In other news, Alsum is putting the finishing touches on its world-class 15,000 square foot Specialty Potato Packaging Facility during the month of October, with a start-up date in early November 2013. With the completion of the facility, Alsum Farms & Produce will have a total of 130,000 square feet of production and warehouse facilities with 140 full-time employees.
