Bargain Boxing: NOLA's Local Produce Package

Published:

IMG_5176Last week while New Orleans for New Year’s Eve the weather was less than ideal (around 50 degrees and raining), so we made a group decision to keep the party indoors. Our menu consisted of a cheese plate, macaroni and cheese and homemade pizzas (notice a theme?). As we ran around town collecting the necessary ingredients we wound up stopping by the Hollygrove Market and Farm. All at once an urban farm, home to a community garden and a local produce market, HM&F’s mission (read more about it here) is to increase the availability of fresh produce to the Hollygrove community and surrounding areas, including local restaurants. HM&F offers a variety of discounts: residents of the surrounding Hollygrove neighborhood can register for a discount card good for 20% off their entire purchase, university and college students are eligible for 10% off (with valid student ID), and they also accept cards from local discount clubs (our host for the weekend has a Green Card — people in NOLA are all about keeping it local). While pretty much every aspect of HM&F is awesome, I think my favorite thing they do is “The Box:” IMG_5173The New Year’s Eve box consisted of the following:
  • 1 bag of Non-GMO Cornmeal or Rice
  • 1 grapefruit
  • 2 navel oranges
  • 6 satsumas
  • 2 meyer lemons
  • 1 head of cauliflower
  • 1 head of broccoli
  • 1 jar of honey or 1 pint of strawberries (which, according to our host, are in season),
  • 1 bunch of white lady turnips
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 bunch of spinach
  • 1 bunch of herbs.
That is a lot of fresh produce for just $25. I know what you’re thinking - I wouldn’t normally use those items. HM&F offers recipes on their website that utilize all of the ingredients from The Box. They’ll even deliver The Box right to your doorstep. I can’t imagine what a service like this would cost where I live, but if it’s anywhere near as good of a deal then sign me up.
