Summer Fancy Food 2014

The 2014 Summer Fancy Food Show ran from June 29 – July 1 at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York, and broke records in terms of both exhibitors and attendees.

Forget the Beatles; the hottest British invasion at the Fancy Food Show was Peanut Hottie – an instant hot peanut butter drink available in peanut butter and chocolate peanut butter varieties. Englishman Andrew Wilson of Bravura Foods, based in New York, offered passersby a delicious sample.

Some Fancy Food Show items were as pretty as a Baby Peach – as in Baby Peach Compote – the latest import from Japan. Baby Peach Compote is made from pickled baby peaches the size of olives that are so tender one can eat the pit and all! Yasua Takahashi of Abukuma Foods Co., Ltd., explained that they are initially being introduced into the U.S. for foodservice and help make creative drinks and baked goods.

At the Fancy Food Show the only sad face on the floor belonged to this piece of sushi, but his fortunes have changed now that San-J International, based in Richmond, Va., has introduced Tamari To Go – a box of 20 travel packs of the company’s organic and gluten-free soy sauce.

“Gluten-free” was the word at the San-J booth, where in addition to soy sauce, gluten-free Miso and other soups were being sampled.

A wheel of fine cheese doesn’t have a prayer now that Boska Holland has introduced a newfangled cheese slicer that spins down on the cheese and finely shaves it for serving.

Elyse Pressner (right) president of Dumont, N.J.-based Northern Valley Baking Co. proudly talked about her line of The Other Macaroon – an almond cookie sold in Original, Orange, Lemon, Mocha and Chocolate-covered varieties. The Other Macaroon is sold frozen and packaged in resealable gusseted bags so consumers can only take out the number that they will be eating. They thaw in 10 minutes. So far the line is being carried at Whole Foods stores in the New York/New Jersey area, as well as H-E-B Central Market and independent gourmet shops.

Greg Nielsen, director of marketing at Oakland, Calif.-based Numi Tea was busy sampling scores of new items, including the 4-SKU line of Turmeric teas and Indulgent Teas, flavored with cocoa to create a really unique drink.

Pop quiz: What is the top selling condiment in Germany? It is Hela Sauce, of course, with 30 million euros in sales and a 70% market share. Dan Forman, director of PR at Honest Tea, has a broad smile on his face because the Bethesda, Md.-based Coca-Cola subsidiary just sold its billionth bottle of ice tea. Among the new items being sampled at the Summer Fancy Food Show were Unsweet Lemon Tea, Summer Refresher Lemonades, sold exclusively at Whole Foods and featuring Fair Trade sugar, along with zero calorie naturally sweetened sodas. “These sodas are starting to take off and we are seeing a lot of traction on them,” Forman said. “It is a line extension that will stay around for a long time.”

Manhattan Special soda has been around for a long time – since 1895 – but it is finding new found fame since it is manufactured in super-trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and made with all-natural ingredients, including pure brewed coffee – not coffee concentrate.

A wide variety of teas were being sampled at The Republic of Tea booth. The company’s teas are packaged in fashionable, reusable steel canisters which block out light and impurities, keeping the tea fresher, say company officials.

The big news at Lucini Italia Co. was the new formulation and packaging of the Lucini Estate Select Olive Oil. Now marketed as Lucini Select Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the new label replaces the red with a more upscale looking parchment and features a squatter bottle that is designed to better fit on store shelves and home cupboards.

Kohana Slow Roasted Coffee “is all about revering the coffee bean,” said Adele Simmons, managing director, at the Austin, Texas-based company. “We want to maintain that Hawaiian essence and Hawaiian feel since that is where we began.” That beginning started with a cold brew concentrate and this year the company was sampling its new ready-to-drink cans. The cans are 8-ounces and 67% less acidic than competing brands, Simmons said. The black has only 20 calories per serving, while the sweetened versions have 100 calories and are sweetened naturally with a monk fruit sweetener.

Mediterranean Snacks sampled its new shelf-stable Tapaz2Go packs featuring gluten-free Lentil crackers and humus. The new packaging for its 7-SKU line of Baked Lentil Chips was also on display.

It is easy to see why Caviaroli got glowing reviews from show goers. The encapsulated olive oil beads, imported from Spain by Gordon’s Gourmet of Stoughton, Mass., look like caviar and are available in five flavors: Plain, Basil, Rosemary, Black Sesame and Chili, said Gordon Buschbaum, president.

Long Island City, N.Y.-based Chocomize was showcasing a huge variety of candy bars that can be customized for a variety of occasions, including weddings and corporate Christmas gifts. Buick recently placed an order for their current customers, company officials say.

A “hot” item at the Chocomize booth was the hot chocolate on a stick. Stirred into hot water, milk or half and half they make a killer hot chocolate. Available in a wide variety of flavors, they wholesale for $1.73 each and retail for up to $3.00.

Known for its tins of gourmet salted pecans, Schermer Pecans of Albany, Ga., has branched out into pecan oil. According to company officials, pecan oil offers several advantages over olive oil in that it is lighter, does not congeal under refrigeration, and has a high smoke point so it is ideal for stir-fry. It can also be used as a makeup remover.
