Sustainable Seafood NGO Launches “FishChoice 2013” Platform

Nearly four years since the first iteration of its website launched, FishChoice has launched a new platform, “FishChoice 2013,” to better serve those businesses that buy and sell sustainable seafood.

FishChoice 2013’s free membership platform offers distributors, supermarkets, restaurants, chefs, and others a dynamic sustainable seafood resource designed for businesses. Companies that are looking for new seafood products have 2,700+ product listings from nearly 400 companies at their fingertips that can be searched by filters such as seafood origin, seasonal availability, and supplier’s distribution area. Businesses also have new options to learn more about where their seafood comes from with detailed supplier profiles, buying guides, and an industry resources section.

For seafood companies listed on FishChoice.com, the new platform offers them an increasingly valuable online presence dedicated to seafood sustainability. Says Michael Dimin of Sea to Table, “FishChoice is the most effective aggregator of the science of seafood sustainability, allowing buyers to make holistic informed choices. The new FishChoice 2013 platform further demonstrates how FishChoice is a valued partner in our effort to share transparent information with both new and existing customers.”

FishChoice.com aggregates up-to-date, science-based seafood information from its sustainability partners (which include the Seafood Watch Program at Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Marine Stewardship Council, and NOAA Fisheries) and then adds the corresponding products, suppliers, and relevant supporting information to the website. Since the website’s original launch in August of 2009, nearly 4,000 professionals have signed up to use this one-of-a-kind resource. Companies at different levels of the seafood supply chain use the website’s resources and platform to find new products, attract new business, retain existing clients, and stay current with the sustainable seafood movement. Although most of the businesses that currently use FishChoice.com are North American based, the organization expects to see an increasingly global membership in the coming year.
