The Cheesepocalypse is Upon Us
By Kimberley Coughlin
Apparently the Polar Vortex makes people crave nachos and queso dip because a couple of east coast grocery stores are reporting a shortage of Velveeta. According to this Ad Age article, one employee at a Brooklyn-area grocery claims that their store won’t get the big brick of cheese back in stock until February. Naturally, the Twitterverse is freaking out; both #Velveeta and #Cheesepocalypse have started trending on the social media site. When I was in college it was Kraft’s arsenal of cheese-related products that keep me from starving; whether it was a grilled cheese made with Kraft singles, a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese or Velveeta Salsa Dip (I added Philly Cream Cheese when I wanted it to be extra creamy), I never went hungry when Kraft was around. Surely, they won’t let me down now, right? When Ad Age contacted Kraft Foods Group about the shortage they assured them that – while there is a high demand for a product and some stores are out of stock – this is “a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand.” Whew! That means Velveeta should be back on the shelves just in time for my new year’s resolution to "eat healthy" to fall by the wayside. How are you coping with the #Cheesepocalypse?
